2016 Winner - Calum Gillies

This year's winner of the CFA/CFJ Apprentice of the Year competition is Calum Gillies of Islay Flooring and Home Furniture, Isle of Islay.

The prize giving took place on 5 May at the FITA Training Centre in Loughborough. Calum was presented with the Award, £500 kindly donated by CITB and officially presented by Paul Gaze of CITB. Calum also received prizes generously donated by the competitions many sponsors and included Adhesives, Cash Prizes, Electronic Measuring Equipment, Finishing Products, Flooring Accessories, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Subfloor Preparation Products, Training Courses, Vouchers and Work Wear.

'As an apprentice, I enjoy learning the varied installation techniques when working with the diverse materials and equipment in the flooring industry. The diversity of materials means you don't get bored doing the same thing all the time and you always have to be thinking about the next stage of an installation and the best way to successfully fit a floor. People think it's just fitting carpets and vinyl, but there's more to it. Being the winner of the Contract Flooring Journal and Contract Flooring Association Apprentice of the Year prize is my proudest career moment.' - Calum Gillies

'Calum, from his first day at work, has shown a real keenness to learn and isn't afraid of hard graft. He's become more and more confident in the trade over the past two years, to the point he's now doing jobs on his own. We work with a vast range of materials and sub-floor types and he's been excellent in all aspects from preparation to completion. He's had great feedback from customers, too, which is essential to my business, and I have no doubt he'll go very far in this trade as his confidence and experience grows.' - Donald Logan (Calum's employer)

'Calum has shown a keen interest in the course work at college and a great attitude to the flooring industry. He's worked in other professions and this has given him a good understand of the benefits of gaining an apprenticeship in floorlaying. He's a very fast learner and is always eager to practice any aspects of the coursework that's new to him and when finished he'll help the other with their work. He shows a high regard for the company that employs him and is always promoting their work by showing pictures of installations that they've completed and discussing the different situations that he's been in. Calum is a very diligent worker and always strives for perfection in everything he's produced at college and he has a great future in the trade ahead of him.' - Mark Purdie of Glasgow City College
