Tate Modern Donates Quality Carpet to Charity Emmaus Greenwich
When John Butler of John Butler Contracts Ltd contacted us regarding a contract at Tate Modern, he was seeking an outlet for 650sqm quality carpet that had been laid for a high profile exhibition, we were only too pleased to help.
Instead of the carpet going to waste once it was no longer needed, Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) actively looked for a new home for it and it was gifted to the Emmaus Greenwich community and given a new lease of life as bedroom carpet.
The CRUK network includes companies and organisations that can help with reuse, repurposing and recycling of carpet wastes. It was clear from the enquiry that John was looking to use the carpet again in some way and to offer value to a charitable organisation. This is where we put him in touch with Emmaus Greenwich, a worthwhile charity near to the Tate Gallery.
CRUK regularly accesses the Reuse Network online to source charitable organisations who accept donations of flooring. Marie Rhodes says “We were very pleased to facilitate the reuse of the Tate gallery carpet alongside John Butler Contracts and our thanks go to John Butler for coordinating this with Emmaus. It demonstrates that the effort of making some enquiries is really worthwhile”.
Emmaus (pronounced em-MAY-us) is a homelessness charity with a difference. Their strapline is We don’t just give people a bed for the night; we offer a home, meaningful work and a sense of belonging. Nicky Martin, Chief Executive of Emmaus Greenwich, said: “With winter fast approaching, we’ve been spending time refurbishing our community spaces to give them a more homely and cosy feel, and this new carpet has made such a difference. We’d like to say a huge thank you everyone at the Tate, Carpet Recycling UK and JBC Floors for thinking of Emmaus Greenwich at this difficult time.”
Phil Monk, Senior Design and Production Manager at Tate Modern, added: “As part of Tate’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and our desire to follow the reduce, re-use, recycle approach to waste management, we are particularly happy that the carpet can be put to such great use.”
