Build UK Daily Update

Source - Build UK

The Scottish Government has published its route map through and out of the crisis, giving an indication of how it will ease lockdown measures in Scotland. It sets out its phased approach on page 41 and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed yesterday that the advance preparation of non‐essential construction sites in Scotland can begin from 28 May 2020. Further sector‐specific guidance, including for construction, is due to be published next week.

Since the start of the coronavirus (COVID‐19) crisis almost 10 weeks ago, Build UK has focused on keeping construction sites operational and making sure our members and the wider industry are kept up to date with the latest information and support to help them respond as quickly as possible to the wide range of challenges faced. The collaboration between representative bodies, liaison across Government departments, and engagement with other sectors has been extraordinary and on a scale we could never have imagined. It has proved extremely effective, with construction leading the way in dealing with the new world of social distancing.

As Scotland follows England’s lead in lifting the current restrictions, there is the opportunity for the industry to start to look ahead and plan its future. We can take huge pride in the contributions the sector has made to the coronavirus response and the fundamental part it will play in the economic recovery.

By adopting new ways of working, we can restore public confidence in the industry. By delivering the Construction Leadership Council’s ‘Roadmap to Recovery’, due to be published shortly, we can implement the changes required for the longer‐term sustainability of the sector. And by adjusting the way we do business, we can speed up the infrastructure revolution and help get the UK economy back on its feet.

The bank holidays provide a welcome break, particularly at the moment, and we do hope that you get an opportunity to take some ‘down time’. Looking after yourself as well as your businesses and your staff is extremely important, and we will be back with our next update on Tuesday!
